Some Brief Thoughts on Equality


The issues of equality and fairness frequently are points of discussion in education (particularly when working with students with learning differences) and the wider world.

With regard to the attribute of striving to be principled, the IB Learner Profile states that, “We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.” I truly believe that this statement is one we should keep close to heart to ensure more inclusive practices within the school setting.


As much as Sotomayor’s quote resonates with me, I am mindful that achieving this is - as is so often the case - easier said than done.

The image below wonderfully encapsulates the limitations inherent in what is perceived to be a “fair test”.


I appreciate the way in which the two following images illustrate both the differences between equality, equity and fairness as well as the positive repercussions when inclusive practices are implemented.



I invite you to consider which barriers (systematic or other) may currently be in place within your school setting, and how you can address these so as to help ensure more inclusive practices are implemented throughout.
