#240 Listen !

When you hear the word listen, what do you think of?

I imagine that for many of us, we may think of a reprimanding tone instructing us to pay attention.

For others it may be an invitation encouraging us to keep focussed or gently imploring us to listen more attentively.

Generally the word listen reminds us to use our ears (and only our ears) to attend to that being said.

However, the Chinese character, as shown above, encompasses a more holistic approach to listening.

It entails many elements making listening more than simply an aural exercise. I was very much reminded of this more extensive notion of listening during Wednesday's yoga class. I was listening attentively (the class is in French) as Maurice, our yoga teacher, directed us through different poses.

I was very much listening with my eyes, mind and heart so as to fully benefit from the 90 minute class.

When you listen, do you listen with only your ears or your whole body?

If just your ears, I encourage you to endeavour to listen more mindfully by engaging your whole body in the listening process.
