Nobel Peace Prize Laureates ~ Some Favourite Quotes Pertaining to Education [Blogpost 101]
~ Malala Yousafzi (2014, joint winner), Martin Luther King Jr., (1964), and Nelson Mandela (1993, joint winner)
With the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 award ceremony having taken place on Tuesday in Konserthuset Stockholm, I have been reminded that aside from being wonderful role models in the area of civil rights, Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Malala, Mandela and Martin Luther King have also shared their insight into the role of education in the pursuit of peace. This is evident in the three quotes (which are among my favourites) shown above.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded since 1901 to both individuals as well as organizations. A list of winners, the year in which they were awarded and - where applicable - the citation, is here: The Nobel Prize: All Nobel Peace Prizes.
Continuing with the theme of Nobel Peace Prize laureates and their thoughts on education, I am sharing some education quotes from other Nobel Peace Prize Laureates:
“Inclusive, good-quality education is a foundation for dynamic and equitable societies.”
~ Desmond Tutu (1984)
“Education is the proper way to promote compassion and tolerance in society. Compassion and peace of mind bring a sense of confidence that reduce stress and anxiety, whereas anger and hatred come from frustration and undermine our sense of trust. Because of ignorance, many of our problems are our own creation. Education, however, is the instrument that increases our ability to employ our own intelligence.”
~ Dalai Lama (1989)
“I have always had this view about the modern education system: we pay attention to brain development, but the development of warmheartedness we take for granted.”
~ Dalai Lama (1989)
~ Mandela (1993, joint winner)
~ Frederick Willem de Klerk (1993, joint winner)
~ Kofi Annan (2001)
"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development… For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right…. Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential."
~ Kofi Annan (2001)
"Education, if it means anything, should not take people away from the land, but instill in them even more respect for it, because educated people are in a position to understand what is being lost. The future of the planet concerns all of us, and all of us should do what we can to protect it. As I told the foresters, and the women, you don’t need a diploma to plant a tree."
~ Wangari Maathai, (2004)
~ Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (2011, joint winner)
Do these quotes which demonstrate the inextricable link between peace and education resonate with you?
Thanks for leaving a comment. I am sure that it is no surprise to you that I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding education and health as basic human rights.
Anita: some thoughtful quotes. Brings me back to a tenet I hold dear: education and healthcare are not privileges for some, rather, they are human rights for all.
