#247 Change? Uncertainty? Opportunity?

As creatures of habit, it is easy to be fearful of change and uncertainty.

However Cuban reminds us - no implores us - to view change and uncertainty as something not to fear.

Rather he views opportunity as a natural consequence of change and uncertainty.

Throughout the year I - along with our school nurse - do multiple wellbeing check-ins with all of our students.

At present, we are focussed on our Grade Five students as change and uncertainty are uppermost in their minds.

Their biggest concerns at present centre on the reality of leaving primary school and moving to middle school at the end of this school year as well as the upcoming PYPX.

With regard to moving to middle school, their emotions include the typical excitement and nervousness about being new, as well as concerns about homework and the joy in knowing they will have more opportunities in terms of academics and extracurricular activities.

As to the PYPX, many seem excited about researching a topic of interest, having a mentor, but are also concerned about the timeline and presenting in front of others.

Mark Cuban’s quote reminds us of the importance of framing change and uncertainty as opportunities to be embraced and realized, rather than feared.
