Hypocognition [Blogpost 91]

While reading this Scientific American Article, Unknown Unknowns: The Problem of Hypocognition, I came across the line, “Often, human fate rests not on what people know but what they fail to know. Often, life’s outcomes are determined by hypocognition.” I found the article intriguing and feel I am still processing the contents.

While there was much to take from the article, the discussion regarding language was of particular interest to me. I have long been aware of the notion that in certain languages there are concepts which are wonderfully encapsulated in a word or two, yet when rendered in English a whole phrase or sentence is needed. A prime example is the oft cited, Portuguese word saudade.

I invite you to read the article and take the time to internalize the contents and let the concept of hypocognition percolate.
