In the Smallest of Moments [Blogpost 117]
These days of isolation (17 and counting) have many of those “smallest of moments” where not only is trust built, but care and connection is evident. It was not until I started to write this blogpost that I realized that the title Care and Connection of last week’s blog post, was taken (most likely subconsciously) from this quote by Brene Brown.
I believe that when we look back at this time, we will see how - through these smallest of moments multiplied together - kindness, compassion, care, and community rose above the fear.
Of the multiple examples of kindness, compassion, care, and community, these are a few that stand out:
Communities, in multiple countries around the world, sharing their love, support and thanks to frontline workers around the world (see image below for Mont’Kiara, my neighbourhood here in Kuala Lumpur).
Educators reaching out to their students, their school community and beyond. One of my favourites is this short Mindful Monday video recorded by my dear friend, Amira.
School districts/Local Education Authorities ensuring that students who qualify for free school meals continue to get meals (see image below from Milpitas Unified School District, my former school district in California).
Small businesses continuing to serve those in their community (see image below of the handwritten message on the bag from SushiKitchen, (#sushikitchenbukitbintang) one of my favourite restaurants here in Kuala Lumpur).
Communities maintaining physical distance, yet coming together. Started in New Zealand and spread to countries where daily walks are still allowed, communities around the world are drawing on Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (video link here for Michael Rosen performs We're Going on a Bear Hunt) by making it a game for children to spot teddy bears in the windows of the houses of their neighbours (outlined by Roy in 'Bear hunt' helps banish coronavirus boredom for New Zealand children)
Keep looking for the “smallest of moments” in which to pay attention, listen, care and connect with others.
Stay safe, stay well!
