Listening [#124]
I was recently reminded about the Chinese character (see black and white image above), pronounced as “ting” which means to listen. Unlike the English word, the Chinese character for listening or to listen illustrates that listening is a whole body act. While I prefer the aesthetics of the image above, the image below (taken from 5 listening insights from the Chinese character for listening) clearly shows the individual components of the character.
As you move towards the end of this school year and navigate the uncertainties of ending one school year and considering how the next one will start, I invite you to not just listen, but to do so with your whole body - your heart, your mind, your ears, and your eyes - so as to really understand that which is being communicated to you by those around you be it students, fellow educators, parents and/or prospective members of your school community.
